Though a Singaporean finance professional and co-founder of a mobile app by day, my passions are largely centered around my family and 4 year old son. A fan of MMA, fishing and marathons, this 2018 effort will be my 6th full marathon, and 2nd one blindfolded. The first blindfolded race in 2008, was motivated by my then employers CSR campaign, Seeing is Believing – a global campaign to avoid preventable blindness. Though having always promised myself another attempt at the decade anniversary mark, today’s motivations are vastly different.
A lot has happened in 10 years. Careers are forged and families are grown. Though a lot of the times this happens in a rather selfish fashion as ego drives a large part of self-advancement. In my case, despite the occasional charity effort here and there, while trying to develop my son’s moral fabric to care for the less fortunate, did I truly realized how little I’ve given back and how many people in Singapore are also blind to the plight of the less fortunate in the region.
With my wife Tracey being a teacher, we have wanted to focus our efforts towards children and helping the less fortunate. We have also been concerned in the lack of visibility many charities operate under and how the benefits are not very tangible as funds are inadequately optimized given bureaucracy and superfluous admin.
These are the reasons we are so drawn to Happy Hearts Indonesia and its #iamchange campaign for East Nusa Tenggara. We truly look forward to making a measurable difference and inviting our friends and family in this journey on giving back. To show love and compassion to a child has to be one of the best ways to ensure a better world going forward. By helping the schools in the region that suffered through poverty or natural disasters and creating a safe learning environment for the children in these regions, is one of the best legacies we can think of and one of the best ways to teach our son the beauty of compassion and charity.
