From Plastic Waste to Quality Education: Block Solutions Indonesia and Happy Hearts Indonesia Rebuild Schools with Recycled Plastic Raw Materials

Jakarta, Indonesia – Happy Hearts Indonesia, in collaboration with Block Solutions Indonesia, proudly announces the successful completion of the first two Block Schools: RA Batu Rakit and TK IT Bina Insani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, made of recycled plastic raw material. The project was made possible with the generous support of Our Goals, a growing brand in environmental and social consultancy.

According to Sylvia Beiwinkler, CEO of Happy Hearts Indonesia, “The Block School project is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and education. In our 10th anniversary and our commitment to #ReachHHIgher which is to reach more children, communities and create more impact, this partnership with Block Solutions Indonesia has allowed us to introduce an innovative, eco-friendly solution that reduces plastic waste and addresses the need for sustainable and resilient education facilities in earthquake-prone areas.”

The Block Schools made of plastic blocks of PP, PET, and HDPE, offer a zero-carbon solution to conventional construction materials. Each classroom built using block materials can significantly remove 1-2 tons of plastic waste from the environment. A classroom can be built in as little as 8 hours, making it a more cost-effective option than traditional building materials.

Jimmy Hutasoit, Country Director at Block Solutions Indonesia, said, “The elasticity of the blocks makes them ideal for earthquake-prone areas, making them safer than traditional construction materials. The lower mass of the building also means lower seismic design forces, making it more resistant to earthquakes.”

The Block School project aligns with 11 UN SDGs, touching upon various areas such as environment, climate, education, etc. These schools are a shining example of sustainability and progress, creating a better world for future generations through their innovative use of eco-friendly building materials.

Some key benefits and impacts of the Block Schools include being much lighter than conventional bricks, easy and efficient to assemble, creating circularity, maintaining a cooler temperature inside, featuring a modular building system, and being non-toxic. Happy Hearts Indonesia and Block Solutions Indonesia aim to create a more sustainable future for the next generation.
