Accelerating WASH Facilities Development for Shared Prosperity and Quality Education

Access to clean water and sanitation are crucial as well as essential in bearing our life. It stands as a beacon of hope and quality life which hereafter can elevate economic opportunity and reduce social inequalities. One of the driest regions of Indonesia, East Nusa Tenggara has faced an excessive drought every year which is strengthened by WALHI NTT data where they discovered that 70% of NTT areas are facing water scarcity.

It is further prolonged by prolonged dry seasons and low rainfall, with some areas experiencing extremely long periods without rain, exceeding 60 days. This issue has placed schools in vulnerability where lack of water access can cause delay in improving quality education, because a well-established school must have equipped facilities to support their students to grow and develop.

Happy Hearts Indonesia have committed to equipping schools we rebuilt with well-established WASH facilities. In collaboration with PT Lautan Luas Indonesia, we will build WASH facilities in 5 Early-Stage Schools (PAUD). All of these schools are situated in Malaka Regency where students and staff must resort to collecting water from nearby community wells about 150 meters away to fulfill their water basic needs.

PAUD Magdalena, PAUD Buah Hati, PAUD Oan Lalawar 2, PAUD Sinar Kfauleur, & PAUD Mane Ikun are the targeted beneficiaries with the total numbers of direct beneficiaries are 204 (Students and Teachers) while the indirect beneficiaries will be 204 households (612 community members).

While it remains challenging to provide water access in NTT, it’s unwavering that we need to foster water equality for all and implement a long-lasting solution to solve water scarcity. Let’s join hands to reduce water access inequalities in all parts of Indonesia by becoming our changemakers!
