For years, early childhood education in Pogo Tena Village was a story of pure resilience. Founded in June 2014, PAUD Sinar Pagi operated out of a single, cramped 4×6-meter room. Its walls were made of woven bamboo, the floor was rough concrete, and a bare tin roof offered little relief from the heat without any ceiling overhead.
Most parents in the community work as local farmers with primary school educations. Despite their hard work, providing basic infrastructure for their children’s school was beyond their reach. Without access to proper toilets, playgrounds, or basic amenities, learning was a daily struggle.
Outside the classroom, another silent crisis was threatening the children’s futures before they even reached primary school: stunting.
In rural East Nusa Tenggara, routine health check-ups at the local Posyandu (Integrated Health Post) are critical for tracking toddler growth. But without a permanent space, the Posyandu moved constantly from one villager’s home to another, making it nearly impossible for families to attend regularly.
“It was exhausting for parents and teachers alike,” recalls Inocensia Vivisia, Principal of PAUD Sinar Pagi.
“The locations changed every month and were often too far to walk with four- and five-year-olds. On many days, families simply couldn’t make it.”
Without consistent health monitoring, early signs of malnutrition went unnoticed, leaving the school’s stunting rate stubbornly high at over 20%.
Turning Classrooms into a Community Lifeline
Everything changed when Happy Hearts Indonesia, alongside our donor and local partners, stepped in to rebuild PAUD Sinar Pagi from the ground up.
The fragile bamboo hut has been transformed into a sturdy building, equipped with:
- Two spacious classrooms with proper desks and chairs
- Indoor educational toys and a vibrant outdoor playground
- Clean sanitation and toilet facilities
What began as a project to provide safe classrooms quickly grew into a vital hub for community health.
The new building offered what the village had lacked for years: a permanent, reliable home for the local Posyandu. Every month on the 5th, the classrooms transform into a healthcare sanctuary for 71 children and 18 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers across the village.
“The Posyandu activities are smoother and far more comfortable now,” says Principal Inocensia.
“Children have space to play, and health workers have the dignity and room they need to provide proper care.”
From Tracking Growth to Fueling Futures
A permanent building meant healthcare workers could finally build consistency. Instead of hunting for temporary spaces, local cadres could focus entirely on preventive care, early detection, and parental empowerment.
During monthly check-ups, parents receive hands-on nutrition education, including practical workshops on “My Plate for Toddlers,” creating healthy complementary meals from home gardens, and early stunting prevention.
“Before, tracking growth was nearly impossible because attendance fluctuated,” explains Yustina Adolf, a local Posyandu cadre.
“Now, everything happens under one roof. We can regularly measure height and weight, spot malnutrition early, and intervene before it turns into stunting.”
Numbers That Change Everything
When you invest in proper infrastructure, the ripple effects extend far beyond concrete and tin. Since the new building opened:
- Stunting Dropped Drastically: Reduced from over 20% to just 5%. Today, zero students enrolled at PAUD Sinar Pagi suffer from stunting.
- Parent Engagement Soared: Attendance at health education sessions jumped from 50% to nearly 90%.
- A Lasting Community Asset: Teachers and healthcare cadres actively collaborate to maintain the facility, ensuring a clean and safe environment for both education and healthcare.
Rebuilding PAUD Sinar Pagi provided more than just two new classrooms and a permanent health hub. It delivered a real, lasting solution to a critical community challenge. This is what happens when children finally have a safe place to learn, play, and grow.
