When we completed the new school building for TK Nurul Ikhlas in North Lombok in 2025, we knew we were creating more than just classrooms. We were opening the door to new opportunities for children, teachers, and families. Bright, welcoming learning spaces replaced worn-out classrooms, giving every child a safe place to learn, play, and grow.
But even with a beautiful new school, one challenge remained.

Just a short distance from the main road, a narrow dirt path was the only way to reach the school. During the dry season, it filled the air with dust. When the rainy season arrived, the path became muddy and slippery, with puddles and uneven ground turning every school drop-off and pickup into a careful balancing act.
Every school day began with struggle.
For parents, it wasn’t just an inconvenience—it was a daily worry. They feared their children might slip and fall. Motorcycles struggled to pass through the mud. And despite having a brand-new school, getting there safely remained a challenge.
The school’s principal, Mrs. Maulidawati, watched parents carefully guide their children along the muddy path whenever it rained. The school simply didn’t have the resources to improve the road on its own.
Yet something remarkable happened.
The new school had done more than provide better classrooms—it had inspired a stronger sense of ownership within the community.
Parents began talking while waiting to pick up their children after school. They shared the same concern, but instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem, they started asking a different question:
“What if we fixed the road together?”
That simple idea quickly turned into action.
Without waiting for additional funding, parents and community members volunteered their time. They cleared bushes along the path, gathered rocks and gravel, leveled the uneven ground, and mixed cement by hand. Some contributed their labor, while others donated construction materials or prepared meals and drinks for the volunteers.
Nobody waited. No heavy machines. No large construction budget.
Just neighbors helping neighbors

Little by little, the muddy trail began to transform. The holes disappeared. The ground became firmer and more even. What had once been a slippery obstacle became a safe walkway leading to the school.
The path changed. So did the community.

Today, parents can bring their children to school with far greater ease and peace of mind. The risk of slipping during the rainy season has been significantly reduced, and the school environment feels cleaner, safer, and more welcoming.
But perhaps the biggest change wasn’t the road, it was the people.
For HHI, rebuilding schools has always been about more than constructing classrooms. It’s about creating places that inspire communities to invest in their children’s future. At TK Nurul Ikhlas, the new school became the spark that encouraged parents and neighbors to continue building on that change themselves.
A community that chose to build together.
One parent, Mrs. Husnul, who participated in the community effort, reflected on what the project meant to her:

“Before, every rainy season we had to be extremely careful bringing our children to school because the path was slippery and full of holes. Now it’s much safer and more comfortable.
“What makes us happiest is knowing that we built this road together. We feel like we’re part of the change for our children’s school.”

The story of TK Nurul Ikhlas reminds us that lasting impact doesn’t end when construction is complete.
A school can do more than educate children.
When quality education infrastructure is matched by community ownership, something even more powerful begins. A small dirt path that once stood in the way has become a symbol of what can happen when schools, families, and communities work hand in hand.
Sometimes.. the biggest changes begin with the smallest path.
