Strengthening School Management for Sustainable Education

Strengthening School Management for Sustainable Education

Happy Hearts Indonesia (HHI) goes beyond building schools. It is equally committed to ensuring that every school it supports can grow and thrive sustainably.

One of the key initiatives driving this effort is the School Management Training program, designed to strengthen the capacity of school principals and treasurers.

By 2026, the program aims to reach 36 schools, grouped into four clusters across various supported regions. Conducted online in February and April, the training focuses on three essential pillars of School-Based Management (SBM): developing School Development Plans (SDP), strengthening transparent financial management, and fostering effective communication with stakeholders.

Why Strengthening School Management Matters

Strong school management is the backbone of quality education. Yet many schools continue to face challenges, from limited managerial capacity and underdeveloped financial systems to low levels of parent and community engagement.

Through this program, schools gain more than just knowledge. They are given space to reflect, exchange experiences, and explore practical solutions that are relevant to their everyday realities.

From Training to Transformation

At Yasmor Oenoni High School, meaningful changes are already beginning to unfold.

Before participating in the training, the school had limited exposure to School-Based Management and lacked a clear strategic direction. Today, the team is gaining a deeper understanding of its current condition through SWOT analysis, refining its vision and mission, and mapping out a clearer path for future development.

Financial management, once handled in a simple and less structured way, is now being improved with a stronger emphasis on transparency. Plans are underway to establish an internal audit team and implement a shared reporting system.

Communication has also evolved. The school is actively strengthening relationships with parents and the wider community through more structured meetings and communication channels, encouraging greater stakeholder involvement.

Voices from the School

“This is our first experience participating in training on School-Based Management. We have learned so much about how to improve school governance in a more focused and systematic way. It has also helped us develop our school’s vision and mission based on a SWOT analysis.

We have now begun applying what we learned in our school. With continued support from HHI after the training, we feel more confident and focused in implementing these changes.” – Juku Ndakajawal, Principal of Yasmor Oenoni High School

These changes may seem small at first, yet for the school, they mark an important step toward building a stronger and more sustainable system.

Because when a school is well managed, learning can happen more consistently, and the quality of education can continue to grow.
