A School That Refused to Stop,
KB Permata Hati

In 2008, in Sumbermulyo Village, early childhood education simply didn’t exist. For many families, there was no place for their children to begin learning.

So KB Permata Hati was born—not from infrastructure, but from initiative.

With no building of its own, the school began on the terrace of the sub-village head’s house. It was a modest space, open to the elements, yet filled with purpose. For years, it became a place where children gathered to learn, guided by teachers who believed deeply in what education could offer.

But each rainy season brought the same challenge. Classes had to stop. Learning was interrupted. And progress, however small, was put on hold.

Still, the school endured.

In 2024, classes moved into the principal’s home—into her living room. It was a meaningful step forward, protecting students from the weather, but the limitations remained.

Three study groups now share a single room. Children sit closely together on the floor, without proper desks or chairs, doing their best to stay engaged. At the same time, the principal and her family continue to live in the same space, generously opening their home to ensure the school could continue. Privacy has become a daily compromise.

Basic facilities are still lacking. The school does not have its own toilet and relies on the family’s household facility.

And yet, every day, the children come.

They come with curiosity, with energy, and with a willingness to learn—despite the conditions around them.

Their commitment, and that of their teachers, reflects something powerful: when education matters, people will find a way to keep it going.

But commitment alone should not be the only foundation.

A safe and supportive learning environment is essential—not only for comfort, but for dignity, growth, and opportunity. Proper classrooms, adequate furniture, and basic sanitation are fundamental to a child’s development.

Today, that long-awaited change is finally underway.

With the support of Himmel Foundation, KB Permata Hati is rebuilt into a space designed for learning. Classrooms that are safe and structured. Furniture that supports daily activities. Educational play equipment, an outdoor playground, and a clean, dedicated wash facility.

These are more than physical improvements. They are an investment in each child’s future.

For the children of Sumbermulyo, this means no more interrupted lessons.
No more sharing a home to access education.
No more learning on the floor.

Instead, they will have a school they can truly call their own.

Because every child deserves not just access to education—but the right environment to thrive.
